Living Typeface

Typographically exploring the notion of life

When one organism dies, it becomes the host for a whole new variety of life. I wanted to explore this notion photographically by creating a piece of type that would be essentially living. The outcome that you can see below was made by filling petri dishes with a mixture of agar jelly and nutrients that would serve as food for the microscopic organisms that live all around us to feed on and grow over time into something unique and alive. The initial letterforms were created from agar jelly that I moulded from laser cut acrylic, these letters then became the food for the bacteria and fungi to slowly grow, thrive, and eventually die.
